What is Boy Movies?
Boy Movies is a weekly newsletter by Allison Picurro (that’s me, hi!) based on a joke I’ve had with myself for years about the binary between boy movies (think Taxi Driver, Ghostbusters, the complete works of Michael Bay) and girl movies (think Mamma Mia!, Lady Bird, the complete works of Nancy Meyers). I myself am not a boy but I am a great lover of boy movies, so you can imagine the ways I’ve struggled over the years with my appreciation of them and what it says about me. Here, I’ll attempt to reckon with it all by unpacking what makes a boy movie a boy movie, the specific ways movies are marketed toward men, what it is about boy movies that appeals (or doesn’t) to the rest of us, and more. Sometimes I welcome guests, sometimes I have contributors, sometimes I do themed months, and sometimes, when I’m in a silly mood, I write about girl movies. Mostly I’m just trying to have fun and eventually sell out to a major corporation in order to achieve my ultimate end goal of early retirement.
Okay, sure, but who are you?
Well, like I said, I’m Allison Picurro. I’m a writer, currently at TV Guide. I have bylines at Decider and IndieWire, and I used to work at HBO. I tweet, despite being raised in a loving home. I make pithy little quips on Letterboxd. I am not Al Pacino. (As far as you know!!!)
Why subscribe?
If you subscribe, you will get a biweekly (in the every two weeks sense) newsletter full of my thoughts on movies for boys. Maybe you’re in an Intro to Film class and you want to argue with your male professor. Maybe you also love Top Gun: Maverick. Maybe you just want to hang out with me. Either way, I’m happy to have you.
Also, Boy Movies has been mentioned in the New York Times, a news organization that has never been wrong about anything.
