I'm super behind on my Boy Movies reading (I have the last 4 issues somewhere in my inbox) but this subtitle demanded my click. And it did not disappoint! I agree with your central premise, which caused me to belatedly realize just how many low quality movies Statham has been in, and yet I still consider him a quality actor. Typically actors only end up doing straight-to-video drek once their career has sailed, but Statham somehow has his cake and his McD's, too. It's an interesting swerve.

Hobbs & Shaw is ridiculous and stupid, even for the F&F franchise. Idris Elba as a cyborg on the order of Darth Vader (more machine than man, twisted and evil) who feels like a low-rent version of a G.I. Joe villain (complete with the black suit). Just no.

right, he IS a quality actor! he has a way of sounding pretty naturalistic, which i realize is a weird thing to say about someone who we see in so many heightened situation, but i stand by it. he's a talented guy who found his weird niche and seems happy to be there!

my favorite part of hobbs & shaw has gotta be when cyborg idris literally says "genocide shmenocide"

I watched The Meg a few weeks ago (just ahead of the sequel), and that movie is so awfully awkward and boring that even Statham couldn't save it. Meg 2 seems to be even worse, so thank you but no thank you. Also, Blitz is freakin' underrated.

Great piece, Allison. Statham is truly one of the last action heroes and he seems to be enjoying being one. If you want to see him flex his acting range a little further than spewing one-liners and kicking criminal asses, I highly recommend London (in which he actually has hair and not one fighting scene :O, and Revolver, an underappreciated Guy Ritchie potboiler).

the meg is definitely pretty boring but i do have some fondness for statham's performance in it, which is not his best but still honestly... good. thanks for reading AND for the recs, akos!!!

This is amazing! I belatedly saw The Meg a few weeks ago and enjoyed the heck out of it; I feel like it did exactly what it set out to do (Jaws but bigger is right!). I love that I know what I can expect from a Statham performance -- that particular reliable brand of gruffness. I can see totally the argument for him being the last action star, although a part of me wonders why our culture is so obsessed with labeling "lasts" and endings generally... Chances are, unless we stop making movies next year, boy actors will be doing action in the years to come!

yes... i will never get tired of the reliable gruffness of statham. truly!!!!!

it really is always such a bold claim to call anyone the last ANYTHING, but i respect that esquire had the gall to do it with statham in 2015. i can't fault them for it... he's still out there doing his thing, better than most
