I would (earnestly) like 300 issues of Matt and Ben, please! Lots of ground to cover still, like the ill-fated revival of Project Greenlight, the Kevin Smith years, the Mindy Kaling play.... anything you publish, I will read and forward <3
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS i so agree that there is somehow always more to talk about with them (i was literally just talking about the flop project greenlight) which is why i just can't help continuing to write about them...
suggestion for Content: anything soderbergh, because i think he is kind of interesting as someone who is more split than most in terms of where he’s gonna land on the boy movies spectrum - like on the one hand you have the ocean’s trilogy and on the other hand i recently revisited sex lies and videotape for the first time since high school and was like oh wow this is a movie about sisters and female empowerment and soderbergh himself has said the flattest character is peter gallagher which he thinks is a flaw but i personally consider allyship actually…? (or like his pandemic project where he was like sure i will take HBO money to hang with three iconic actresses on a boat. lmao.)
suggestion not for Content because you have already written about this movie but just to enrich your life: if you have the opportunity to see michael mann’s heat in a theater, which if you’re in the new york metro area and pay attention to showings at some of the smaller/more niche theaters you will several times in the next calendar year, do it. i saw it for the first time at the paris last year and the crowd response was truly unlike anything i’ve ever seen outside of like a marvel opening weekend… it was like rocky horror for straight men. truly a beautiful thing to witness and be a part of.
SODERBERGH IS SUUUUCH A GOOD ONE i've actually been thinking about how to cover him for the longest time. i so agree about ocean's and love your point about his #ally moment with the peter gallagher character... and YES let them all talk, what was that??? and lest we forget kimi! there's also the magic mike of it all... he's so prolific and so wide-ranging across the boy movie/girl movie spectrum that he's almost impossible to talk about but i am determined to!!! thank you for this!!!
omg i love this heat story so much!!!!!!! "rocky horror for straight men"... god exactly. i'm so glad you had a good time; i saw it at united palace a few years ago when tribeca film fest showed it and had al and bob do a talk before the movie. (michael mann was also supposed to be there but he got covid and recorded a video with terrible sound lol <3) it was absolutely packed with DUDES. they were the belles of the damn ball and they all knew it. i believe it was friend of the newsletter tessa strain who once said that michael mann rep screenings always have the shortest women's bathroom lines, which is so true
hi allison! thank you for all of your writing, you are truly doing god's work. tonight I have watched both Death Race (2008) and Wanted (2008) because of reasons, and it got me thinking ... what do you think was the best year for boy movies?
sry tb rereading but im bored at work and ur newsletters bring me endless joy. i recently listened to a sports podcast that "also recaps movies" as my brother explained tg me to listen and actually last week's ep was 3 male sports writers reviewing Point Break and earnestly saying "god if i could be anyone, anytime, it would be patrick swayze in 1991" and to be clear same, but also immediately made me think about boy movies. also, is The Outsiders a boy or girl movie. it's every mom of a certain ages fav movie imo (ie my mom has a bag of tickets from seeing it in the 80s 30 times) tyyyyy for work
