"Colin… my god. How can I argue against him? I can’t. I’ve loved him too much and for too long. But the fact is that Austin has completely lost touch with himself and possibly reality. "

okay but this was my exact argument with myself when doing the oscars pick ems?????

agreed on most except adapted screenplay...i cant let someone reward that top gun romance side plot. it made me never want to watch people kiss on screen again!!! tom needs to answer for that more than scientology!!!

i have gone on record saying i do hate the maverick romance side plot (and what a waste of jennifer connelly!) BUT ultimately it’s not enough to ruin the script for me, since it amounts to such a small part of it (imo). but overall i do agree!!! tom pls be serious!

I feel like parts of this were written just to bait a response out of me. Or that's me being too much of a boy and aggrandizing myself. Either way, my comments:

1. I believe we agreed that Elvis was a girl movie, but I don't think EEAAO was ever established as a boy movie. Furthermore, I think an issue is overdue on the white perspective that insists everyone is being "too dramatic" about EEAAO.

2. I'm willing to accept that Moonlight & Coda can fall in the in between of "not quite boy movies and not quite girl movies" for entirely different reasons.

3. This comment on Tar makes me seriously think that this entire blog needs a big fat "Caution: Written from the perspective of a white writer" attached to it

4. I actually generally agree with your perspective on Best Actor (notice that I'm skipping the comments on Director which at this point don't warrant a response) but I think there's a missing acknowledgement of the Academy's bias towards biopics which also supports Butler winning.

5. I've lost the ability to comment beyond this but I also generally agree with the comments made (except the Dame Rage and Trowma comments)

love this… drag me!!!!!!! aj, if you ever started a newsletter i want you to know that i would be your first subscriber. i would pay for it, even! but since this is still my newsletter (until you take control of my editorial board and overthrow me) i will say a few things:

1. re: “being too dramatic” i was mostly referring to the freaks on film twitter who i’ve seen alternately calling it the greatest movie ever made or railing against it like it’s a crime against the art of cinema, which i do admit is coming from my own warped perspective as someone who spends too much time online. i don’t think it’s either, but i did enjoy it! also, something i forgot to mention, which is key to my feelings on it, is that i don’t really like it when ANY movie seems as primed to sweep as EEAAO does right now, just because i get frustrated by the implication that any one movie did everything better than all the others — though obviously that’s all speculation right now. it’s still a boy movie tho!!! i will not budge on that! also, re: rage and trowma, i’m sorry but i do think jamie lee curtis actively gives the worst performance in that movie! not budging on that either! absolutely cuckoo bananas to me that she’s in any supporting actress conversations, especially when stephanie hsu is right there next to her.

2. listen i’m not putting an “i’m white” disclaimer because i think it’s clear based on literally every single thing about me. would love hear your thoughts on miss lydia tár tho!

3. everything i’ve written about austin butler came directly from my heart and my [redacted], not my brain. but yes, of course, the biopic thing is very important to note. though everyone’s retrospective hatred of bohemian rhapsody does make me fear for his chances! that’s all!
