Have you written yet about the distinction between "boy movies" and "dad movies," if one exists? The sneaker movie and Top Gun Maverick have both been referred to as "dad movies" a lot, and I for one am curious about what makes a dad movie a dad movie. I assume it has something to do with that shirt Matt Damon's wearing
i have not but i have considered it so many times that it does seem like something i should address!! i think you're right on the money about matt's shirt, how many dads across the globe own that exact shirt? there's also something about the distinction between an action movie for dads (like top gun: maverick) and a talky movie for dads (like air) that might be worth exploring... love this suggestion!!

This summer, 80-year-old boy movie icon Harrison Ford is heading a blockbuster. You take a look at his career, or even the entire subsubgenre of old-man action heroes
Would love to hear your take on masculinity in horror films.... 'American Psycho,' 'Deliverance,' 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Swiss Army Man.' Otherwise def interested on the comedy boom era of the 'Hangover' franchise, and very much looking forward to something on the new 'Fast X'!
I suppose it’s considered a “boy movie” but your take on Speed with Keanu Reeves would be interesting or even Break Point, especially because I’ve seen people talk about the homoerotic subtext in that film.
- Boy Movies takes on the mid-2000s *boy* comedy from our youth - thinking like Dodgeball, Anchorman, the Hangover, Hot Rod, 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers that sort of thing
- not sure if you’re an Elliott Gould gal, for some reason I am dying to have your mind pick apart his 70s star power - I still have more of his films to watch myself but absolutely loved “The Silent Partner”
OOH i've been thinking about the right way to address the mid-2000s boy comedy boom for so long, especially because superbad remains one of my favorite movies ever. i wonder what it would be like to rewatch something like the hangover today??? i can think of at least three jokes just off the top of my head that have aged absolutely atrociously. anyway, this WILL be addressed at some point!!!
i am an elliott gould gal more in spirit than in practice (i think i've only seen two of his classics? adored 'em both, though) but i LOVE the concept of inspecting what it was about him in the 70s that made him such a star. no one's really doing it quite like him anymore...
THANK YOU FOR THESE AMAZING SUGGESTIONS, KERRY!!! <333
I just finished my first watch ever of American Psycho and came here immediately to see if you've written about it; would love to read a deep dive about everything ~going on~ there! (wondering if it fully qualifies as a boy movie if there is a female director?)
Also, after reading your piece on the heavily female & queer fanbase of The Social Network back in the day, I would love to hear anything more you have to say about similar fandom treatment in dramas, movies or tv (i'm definitely thinking of the fandomification of Succession and of course the jeremy strong "babygirl" interviews).

Have to piggyback here and agree on this great idea. Matt Damon may be the human embodiment of dad movies...
Allison, I would also love your take on the work of cinema known as Face/Off!
joe, you’re not the first person to say this to me! (can you believe i’ve never seen face/off???) NOTED!!!
